I have always been interested in healthy eating and have tried many 'eating regimes' over the years. In my 20s I discovered juicing, long before it was popular. Back then I drank a lot of carrot juice!
Over the years I went through a number of juicers that usually ended up in the garage after a few months, usually because I didn't have time to juice. Or so I thought...
Roll on another 20 years, a family...a career...stress...and bad habits started setting in. All of which took a toll on my health. I ended up with chronic back pain and all the side effects that painkillers and pharmaceutical drugs trigger - weight gain, debility, brain fog, depression. I could barely walk for more than 5 minutes without having to sit down in agony to recover. On a few occasions I remember thinking 'This is it, this is my life now'. I could barely get through the day and was tired ALL the time.
So what changed? I watched a documentary on juicing and dared to believe that juicing could actually help me regain my health. After a few practise runs I managed to go 15 days on just juice. My back pain vanished after the first week and I felt normality knocking. I came off all my prescription drugs and thought the only way was up! But I took this second chance for granted, started to neglect my health again, and very quickly ended up on the downward slope...my back pain returned and I felt deflated! I knew that juicing worked for me but the thought of living on just juice forever seemed unachievable. What was the point if I was just going to end up back where I started?
At this point I decided I wanted to try again but needed help and support to see me through the journey so I signed up with a Juicing Health Coach for a 30 day guided plan. Again my back pain vanished and I felt alive for the first time in years. After the 30 days I realised that I didn't have to live on just juice, I just had to include juice as part of my lifestyle to maintain the benefits.
Over the last few years I have made small daily changes...changes that over time have become ingrained habits. One of these is my daily green juice...there's no better way to start the day than knowing you are flooding your body with all the nutrients from fresh fruits and vegetables. My health and wellbeing continue to improve by the day and the back pain never came back. I even started weight training and feel stronger than I have in years.
My experiences and my love of juicing led me to learn more about the health benefits of fresh fruits and vegetables and about Natural Juice Therapy. In 2016 I qualified as a Natural Juice Therapist. My own research in this area is just beginning but having worked as a Research Scientist for the past 17 years and having a PhD in Plant Science I feel qualified to take on this challenge.
I am not advocating living on juice alone. I agree with Jamie Oliver who says 'The future is a plant-based diet' and I believe juicing is a valuable part of that. Every day I am learning more about the power of plants and I want to pass on that knowledge to help everyone improve their health and well being. I am not advocating a diet, just a gradual change in lifestyle towards more plant based eating.
I hope you will join me on my journey and give juicing a try.
As an independent Natural Juice Therapist I have successfully completed The Juice Master’s Juice Therapy course and participated in the Juice Academy. This is a comprehensive course covering Biology; Anatomy & Physiology; Nutrition and Juicing. The course is accredited by the CMA (Complimentary Medical Association) and ‘Juice Master’ is registered and recognized as a school of Natural Juice Therapy. I am however an Independent Therapist, I do not work for Juice Master.
