Fresh fruits and vegetables are packed full of vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients and live enzymes that help to cleanse and rebuild the cells in our bodies from the inside out. If we are not eating enough fruits and vegetables in our daily diet we may be lacking nutrients that are vital for good health.

Fruits and vegetables are a great source of antioxidants

Antioxidants are powerful molecules which can neutralise these free radicals reducing the damaging effect on our bodies. Fruits and vegetables are a primary source of natural antioxidants so increasing our intake of these can contribute to disease prevention.

There are many different antioxidants found in fruits and vegetables some of which contribute to the colour of the produce:

  • anthocyanins are abundant in blue, red and purple foods like blueberries, grapes, red cabbage and aubergines
  • carotenoids are high in orange, yellow and red foods like carrots, sweet potatoes and red peppers
  • lycopenes are high in red apples, tomatoes and watermelons

Green leafy vegetables are also a great source of antioxidants, particularly carotenoids, but the colour is masked by chlorophyll. The easiest way to ensure you are consuming a wide range of antioxidants is to eat or juice a rainbow.
